Landowners have detailed knowledge of the plants and animals within their clan estates and the seasonal calendar that indicates the right times to harvest resources. Landowners and djungkay are reporting changes, such as bush foods not being ready to harvest when they used to be. Although we don’t yet know why these changes are occurring, we are concerned about the effects that climate change factors identified by scientists, such as rising sea levels, changing rainfall patterns, and more severe and frequent cyclones, could have on our land and sea country.
We are working with landowners and djungkay so that we all better understand the potential impacts of climate change on sacred sites in the Djelk region, and we are making plans to protect 10 high-risk sacred sites.
Our long-term goal is to build the resilience of our land and sea country to climate change factors.
